EDIT: For those who like kirin, added the kirin's western cousin to the gallery: the unicorn.
This one was a lot of trouble... A kirin. I debated whether or not to give her a beard. All the kirin images I looked at for reference had beards, so I decided they must be like goats (nanny goats grow beards). Though actually, most of *this* kirin is antelope. Some kirin lore: It is a powerful mystical animal that can be truly fearsome, but it only punishes the wicked. Kirin have compassionate natures and are vegetarians. The Japanese kirin (like this one here) resembles our western unicorn. Like many things Japanese, the kirin originated in China. Along with the Ninetailed fox, the kirin is one of the most powerful creatures of Japan. Next up: an eastern dragon (an actual eastern looking one, too. Not like that crocodile in my gallery that everyone is so fond of. : P) |

The myth of the kirin is Chinese in origin, as of many Japanese things. In Chinese mythology, the kirin only appears to herald the birth of a righteous and virtuous man or the beginning of a golden age. When Confucius was born, a kirin rose out of a lake, and many saw it. When Confucius was undecided about his future, contemplating about it beside a lake, under a tree, a kirin emerged from the water with a scroll in his mouth.
Kirin lore has it that the single horn is ivory in color and texture. It is not hard like ivory, instead it is made of flesh. The holy horn is not for defense or killing. It is to point out the wrong from right. Justice Bao of Kaifeng of the Song Dynasty was said to have a kirin in his courthouse. The kirin never failed to point out the guilty party.

Perhaps you can tell me a bit about dragons before I do the Chinese dragon pic.

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves for they will never cease to be amused.

When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.

I think the background works much better with it, and helps the Kirin to look less cut out.
The lighting, espcially on the hair/fur looks great. Yay for dramatic lighting that has sun rays!

In a very very good way.
